High Heels and High Notes: Kinky Boots at DTC

By Jeff Gudzune

With equal parts sass and sizzle, Delaware Theater Company’s production of Kinky Boots took the stage Saturday night. It was a sold-out crowd for the most anticipated musical of the season. Based on the 2005 film, Kinky Boots is a musical comedy centered on the unlikely pairing of boot-maker Charlie and drag queen Lola. The premise alone is unique enough to tantalize this theatergoer. I was already clutching my pearls.

What happened on the stage Saturday evening was nothing short of magical. Kinky Boots is more than a show, it’s an experience. It’s something that speaks to the dreamer within us all. It’s a challenge to live one’s truth.

With a short expository song introducing the characters as young men, the show quickly escalates into a fast-paced riotous explosion of emotions. When Charlie is forced to take over the family business, he is unprepared for the rocky road ahead of him. The factory that has been in his family for four generations is in danger of closure due to shaky economic times. Realizing his family firm will not survive, Charlie informs his employees that he must let them all go. In a shocking and hilarious reversal, each employee gives Charlie a microeconomics lesson that motivates him to find a new way of doing business. A chance encounter with Lola outside a drag club in London creates a partnership that rocks the industry.

The Delaware Theater Company partnered with New Light Theater to bring about this amazing production. Every aspect of this production was carefully managed to provide an awe-inspiring theatrical experience. The stage itself was its own character, contributing to the mood of the performance.

A two-story rendering of the factory floor with movable equipment pieces and a second-story office provide a bold visual. The use of a long slanting staircase allowed for emotional moments during solo numbers, juxtaposing a physical descent with an emotional revelation. The stage is a prime example of a great use of space and brought an added undercurrent to the production.

There are no stars in this production. By that I mean everyone stands out in their own way. There are main characters, tertiary figures, and ensemble members — all of whom are amazing in their contributions. Adam Hoyak (Charlie) transforms from reserved and uncertain to passionate and determined. Rachel Maselek (Lauren) is not only hilarious in her role but manages to bring an equal amount of comedy and longing to her numbers as she gradually falls for Charlie. Cookie Diorio (Lola) has a stage presence that can be felt in the dark and a voice that resonates to the back of the house. The Angels were more than backup dancers, they were a show of their own. The ensemble factory members each brought character traits to their silent yet vital roles.

Kinky Boots was a wonderful and unique breath of fresh air in a world where entertainment consists of zombies, viral pandemics, dystopias, and other apocalyptic ephemera.

Kick Up Your Heels with Wilmington Drama League's Snazzy "Kinky Boots"

The Wilmington Drama League
is staging an enthusiastic rendition of the much-beloved show Kinky Boots at its refurbished theater on Lea Boulevard. If the standing ovation the players received on Opening Night is any indication, this production is one the reader should make plans to experience!

Kinky Boots is an award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 2005 British film of the same name – written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth (and mostly inspiredby true events) – the musical tells the incredible story of Charlie Price. Having inherited a shoe factory from his father, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with drag queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots and save the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they aren’t so different plus are stronger together than apart.

Disparate Charlie (Stephen Piergrossi) and Lola (Aubrey Murphy) connect over two common bonds – shoes and people. Charlie is as loyal to his factory workers as Lola is to her “Angels” – drag performers like her who form her family. They are also true to themselves – who they are and what they aspire to be.

Piergrossi and Murphy leapt off the stage with powerful voices and sincere emotions that kept the audience rapt. Piergrossi excelled with his touching solo “The Soul of a Man.” It seemed like every Lola song morphed into an epic disco number with bright lights, a chorus of dancers, and a party atmosphere. Murphy held the audience in a trance with her subtle yet strong movements and pointed dialog. You really can’t take your eyes off her. “Celebrate yourself triumphantly,” she says…and does.

Kudos to director/choreographer Patrick Murray for filling every inch of the multi-level modular stage (by Aaron Cook) with dancers, props, and overall action. I especially enjoyed the slapping fans, elevated conveyor belt catwalking, and the visuals during the boxing match. Timothy Cannon and Laurene Eckbold must be cited for the costuming of everyone in the show, but especially Lola and her Angels. The sassy Angels were played by Cannon, Tommy Fisher-Klein, Keian Hagstrom, Todd Hartsock, Galen Keliikuli, and Ricky López.

The crux of any show is the interaction between characters on stage and with the audience. There’s no room for “stupid hubris” (Charlie) and the actors bear all for us to appreciate. At the same time, the core for any musical is the performance of the songs. While many of the songs feel the same, the high energy and quality of the vocals elevate the musical numbers into crowd-pleasers. Simply put, this production of Kinky Boots has you rooting for all sides to win from the get-go. The coda “Raise You Up/Just Be” got the crowd up and moving in their seats for a rollicking finale.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t single out solid performances by Meghan Arters (Nicola) and Catherine Callahan (Lauren) as Charlie’s romantic interests. Both portray characters with kind souls who have no real malice toward people when things aren’t quite going their way. They’re both strong actresses and singers whose postures and authenticities shone.

Performances of Kinky Boots run from March 8 through 17 on Friday and Saturday nights (8 pm) plus two Sunday matinees (2 pm). Tickets prices are $25 with senior/student tickets $20 and children (12 or younger) $15. Group ticket rates are also available through the box office. Tickets can be purchased online at wilmingtondramaleague.org; by contacting the box office at 302.764.1172; or visiting in person at 10 Lea Boulevard. The show runs approximately 2.5 hours with one intermission.

The Wilmington Drama League seats 260 patrons, including six wheelchair bays. The newly revamped theater is equipped with an ADA compliant entrance ramp and bathrooms. “Flex Tickets” are also an option for those who plan to watch several WDL shows, but maybe not all of them. There is much uncertainty and craziness in the world today. On top of that, the pressure of holiday shopping – how do we keep our sanity? Go see KINKY BOOTS! If you need to escape into an evening of pure fun, energy and great music, this is your prescription. Kinky Boots – created by Harvey Fierstein and music icon Cyndi Lauper – is showing at The Playhouse on Rodney Square through December 18, 2016.

Kinky Boots has won every major Best Musical Award and is represented around the world with the Tony Award-winning Broadway Company now in its fourth year. Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots explores the relationship between sons seeking acceptance from their fathers. It also delivers a great lesson on accepting all people for just who they are.

Charlie Price is struggling to live up to his father’s expectations and continue the family shoe company, Price & Son. The company in Northampton, England is on the brink of collapse unless Charlie can figure a way to save the business. In an unlikely turn of events, his life’s path is crossed with the ever-glamorous and dramatic Lola. With the factory’s future hanging in limbo, Charlie and Lola take a huge gamble on fashion boots made for female impersonators. These sturdy new stilettos are a fabulous success and save the day.

The Kinky Boots touring cast features Wilmington's very own Collin Jeffery playing Young Charlie. The two main characters – Charlie played by Adam Kaplan and Lola played by J. Harrison Ghee – do a wonderful job, but Mr. Ghee is the clear star of this show and steals every scene in the most glorious way. Another true standout in the cast is Lauren, played by Tiffany Engen. Not only is her singing voice superior, she also brings a special touch of comedy to the show with every appearance. Her timing in something as simple as a hand gesture brings laughter to the audience.

This is definitely the kind of show one leaves feeling happy, lighthearted and okay with the world. The best show I have seen at The Playhouse on Rodney Square in a while. A must see!
